Stratis is just an automation and communication layer for XFS and LVM

      I did not know that.

I didn't either, was just researching it, lol. It makes it a lot more valuable, it is essentially taking the "one filesystem" advantages of ZFS or BtrFS and making them happen with traditional, mature technologies. Kind of a best of both worlds approach. Actually quite nice, if it works well.

For a one way server, I'd still use rsync. I use Syncthing for other tasks, though, it's great.

      They say it is supported...

      https://blogs.vmware.com/guestosguide/2019/05/red-hat-enterprise-linux-8.html

REHL 8 is - But using the drop down and selecting Fedora it says it isn't.

Either way, I'll just use REHL 8 and be done.

The drop down list told you RHEL isn't, either. Yet we know it is. ESXi is just broken.

That one doesn't actually tell me it isn't supported:

      alt text

But the other RHEL one does. So clearly it's broken if it gives conflicting information. In one case, RHEL isn't supported, then RHEL 8 is. But RHEL 8 is still RHEL.

I understand. I guess they don't update the dropdown in the software 😄

Then best to not use it and not to consider anything from it. Just skip it and protect yourself.

@JaredBusch Correct, I did not state that. However, my OP shows the version as 4.2. So, the issue is that I can't install the latest version available on Fedora. I will update the OP.

NTP can take a considerable amount of time (hours) to whip the system clock into submission if it had drifted far off UTC.

You can start the ntpd with an option to force it to change time directly. It used to be that you'd run ntpdate first and then start ntpd but ntpdate has been depreciated.

ntpq -p will show a little more details about the status of ntp sync. First thing to run when troubleshooting ntp.

I forgot before: You can also login to the admin interface and looking at the settings page. It'll give you a list of performance and security optimizations with links to instructions on how to make the changes.

Yeah that's where this all started. It only states that I need to...

Modify/enable the HSTS header to at least 15552000 seconds PHP OPcache not properly configured and to make changes to the php.ini.

From that though, I got to the hardening and security guide and started to go even deeper down the rabbit hole.

I know you're doing this to learn, so this probably isn't needed at the moment. @scottalanmiller's guide to installing NextCloud with Salt has all the settings correct already according to that settings page.

      Nice. Good going @scottalanmiller.

This was on a MD1000, very old.

MD1000...old school! I know those units. I've got 2 of them in storage gathering dust!

I have 2x LSI 620J. I might just connect it with LSI 9207E HBA

If you don't mind the 3 gbps bus, the MD1000s are amazing.

Interesting: Fedora 25 starts to panic with RAM < 512MB at the beginning of the kernel init phase, even in text mode. Just had a look at the manual which clearly says that Fedora requires 1GB of RAM.

Looks like I'm out of luck and have to stick to Ubuntu / Debian.

Another thing to note is with RHEL/CentOS 7.3 they recommend a 1GB boot partition instead of 512MB.

      Just an aside.

Should work as long as you keep an eye on it. Ubuntu for example likes to keep old kernel and initrd images there until you clean them up (e.g. apt autoclean etc)

Ya I usually keep 3 and remove the others but I think the images are getting big enough they needed to adjust the size. If you do anew install it defaults to 1GB.

I knew the workstation version was, I just didn't understand why they have a "server" version.

Server and workstation are just different sets of packages. Not different products. Server is the actual proving ground, the workstation isn't really a big deal since no one actually uses CentOS or RHEL as a desktop, that would be pretty silly in general. Fedora Workstation is the product that is actually used as a workstation. It is Fedora Server that is the actual proving ground for CentOS and RHEL.

I actually did use CentOS 7 as a desktop for a while, just to try it. It wasn't bad. I don't use anything strange, and was able to compile everything else I needed. Their gnome theme is pretty nice.

Thing is, if you used CentOS 7 that means that it was pretty new. But CentOS 7 will be one painfully old desktop by the time that CentOS 8 is getting close. Fedora updates every six to eight months, so their desktops are always current. So you are never looking at something outdated. CentOS 7 will be many years out of date when it is time to replace it.

You can deploy Cockpit to CentOS too. Red Hat just moved it to "default install" in Fedora before it went to CentOS.
